Too many employers make the assumption that because their employee has in injury on their premise, it automatically qualifies as an injury on duty (IOD).

This isn't true.

COID has very clear rules about what counts as an IOD and what doesn't.

Yet, despite these clear rules many employers still ask our experts if their employees' injuries count as IODs.

Here's whether or not COID will pay for your employee's accident on his lunch break

 
Your employee's lunch break is generally his time. But if you need him, you have the right to summon him and ask him to do something for you. Technically, this means he's still on duty.
 
So if your employee has an accident during his lunch break while he's still technically on duty, COID will cover his injury. 
 
But this isn't always the case.

Here's when COID won't give your employee compensation for a lunch break injury

 
Let's say your employee decides to go out for lunch. He leaves the office and goes to a nearby restaurant. You can't summon him and ask him to do work at this point as he's not in the office at this time.
 
If he has an accident while away from the office, such as slipping on the restaurant floor, COID won't pay for it.
 
Ensure your employees know these rules so they don't have any careless accidents that COID won't pay for. Otherwise, your employee's lunch break may be longer than you expected.
