When it comes to 'promoting a culture of health and safety' in the workplace, one of the most important aspects is to encourage employees to report incidents in the workplace.

Doing so will ensure that hazards and risks in the workplace are dealt with before they can affect someone else, which could put your business in a risky legal position.

To promote a culture of reporting incidents in the workplace, use the following 7 tips...

When we asked the Commissioner what he wants in an incident report, this is what he said...
 
Whenever you place a claim for one of your employees with COID, the Compensation Commissioner examines your incident report in extensive detail.
 
And I know exactly what he looks for!
 
He checks that every detail of the workplace incident or occupational injury has been included along with all the details of your investigation.
 
Miss JUST ONE point on his checklist, and he'll delay your claim. And your employee's compensation will now be your problem!
 
That's why you need to make sure you conduct a thorough incident investigation the first time around.
 
Here are the tips he shared with me!

Seven tips to encourage employees to report incidents in the workplace
 
Tip#1: Encourage open communication, regarding health and safety issues, among all your employees at all levels.

Tip#2: Acknowledge reported incidents and understand that they need fixing.

Tip#3: Take action on dangerous situations that are reported.

This can show that what employees report is, in fact, taken very seriously. And that reporting incidents is a must in the workplace. 

Tip#4: Keep employees updated on reported incidents and let them know what is being done to reduce the risk of such an incident occurring again.

Tip#5: Don't blame your employees for the incident. This can create fear instead of openness in reporting anything that might be wrong.

Tip#6: Lay out the main causes of the incident.

Tip#7: Remember to take preventative action in order to prevent any further incidents occurring.
