Who will pay for Thabo's medical and transport costs when he cuts his arm at work?

by , 02 October 2014
Thabo cuts his arm badly while using your sawing machine at work. He needs medical attention to stop the bleeding and repair the damaged muscles and nerves. And with this comes serious medical bills.

You know Thabo can't afford these medical bills, or even the cost of transportation to hospital.

Now you want to know who'll pay Thabo compensation for these expenses. Is it you or COID?

Read on to find out...

Here's who will pay for Thabo's medical and transport fees

The Compensation Fund has to pay all reasonable medical costs for no more than two years from the date of the incident or diagnosis (COIDA Section 73 (1)). The Director-General of the fund will decide on the need and amount the Fund will pay for medical expenses (COIDA Section 4 (i)).

If the Director-General thinks further medical assistance will reduce your employee's disability, he'll pay for these further costs for a limited period.

Just remember, if you cover the initial expenses for your employee's medical expenses, you can't deduct them from his salary or other benefits.

This is illegal and your employee can take you to court for this and charge you with a criminal offence.

Here's what you must do to ensure Thabo gets all the compensation he needs for his medical and transport bills.

Here's what you must do to ensure Thabo gets compensation

You must keep the claim number the Commissioner sent you in his first response to your claim. You need to use this every time you help your employee claim more compensation for further medical expenses.

Always get a doctor's report to substantiate the claim for these medical expenses.

Now that you know who covers the compensation for medical and transport costs, ensure your employee gets the compensation he needs.
