Are you in the business of looking after people? Here's what the DoL health and safety inspector will check for

by , 17 October 2014
If you look after people, whether it's children in a day care, the elderly in an old aged home or patients in a hospital, you need to be very careful about their health and safety.

But what about the people who work in your facility? Do you take care of them and their health and safety as well?

You should! It's a legal requirement under the OHS Act. And an inspector from the DoL may come to see if you look after your employees in your facility.

Here's what he'll check for...

*********** Hot off the press  ************

Do you have more than 20 employees?

Don't ignore this health and safety obligation or else!

The DoL will slap you with a R50 000 fine or 1 year in jail if you don't have a health and safety representative.

*************************************

This is what the DoL inspector will check for when he assesses your care facility

If you care for anyone in your facility, your employees could contract something from them. That's why the DoL inspector will check if:

1. You provide your employees with personal protective equipment (PPE)
You should provide your employees with PPE, such as rubber gloves, if they look after anyone. Even if you run a day care centre give your employees gloves in case they have to deal with a child that cut itself.

2. You dispose of any medical supplies correctly
If you give the people in your care facility any kind of medical treatment, you must dispose of the used or expired medical supplies correctly.

3. You give your employees cleaning facilities
Regardless of who your employees take care of, they need facilities to clean themselves in afterwards. This will help them maintain good hygiene and limit the spread of any germs between people in your facility.

Bottom line: Take care of your employees as much as you take care of the people in your facility so the DoL inspector doesn't punish you.
