Safe Work Permits: Here are the 12 checks for confined spaces, elevated work, roofs, ceilings and excavation

by , 24 January 2014
A safe work permit (SWP) is a form that a competent person must complete to ensure employees and external contractors are safe when they do hazardous work. The person issuing the permit must put the checks in sequence. The idea is to follow a pattern so he doesn't miss anything important. Here are the 12 checks for confined spaces, elevated work, roofs, ceilings and excavation.

You'll need safe work permits for:

  • Work in confined or enclosed spaces;
  • Work in elevated positions;
  • Roof or ceiling work; and
  • Excavation.

You'll only get the safe work permit after the person issuing it has done the necessary checks.

The Health & Safety Advisor says the person issuing the safe work permit must do these checks:

  • Have you got a safety harness and lifeline available?
  • Have you explained to the employee or contractor how to wear the harness and use the lifeline?
  • Have you provided a 'buddy' to monitor the health and safety of the employee or contractor doing the work?
  • Have you provided sufficient and adequate firefighting equipment for the type of fire which could happen?
  • Have you closed off supplies leading to the work area (such as power or gas lines, pipes)?
  • Have you checked the lines/pipes leading to the work area for leaks?
  • Have you ventilated (provided air) to the work area?
  • Have you completed a gas monitoring process for the work area?
  • Have you provided sufficient and adequate lighting for the work and work area?
  • Have you inspected all structures for safety?
  • Have you provided a suitable roof-ladder, manhole ladder for entrance and exit?
  • Have you provided suitable and sufficient duckboards or crawl boards?

Remember, the work permit must be issued by a competent person (with the necessary qualifications) after they've done the necessary checks. So make sure he does these checks we've mentioned above.
