The Obama administration is taking steps to help the environment, should your company do the same?

by , 03 June 2014
The Obama administration and the Environmental Protection Agency want to achieve a 30% cut in carbon emissions by 2030. Their goal is to limit power pants, particularly coal-fired plants, that produce a lot of CO2 emissions.

If your company has a negative effect on the environment, consider doing the same.

To find out, you must complete your Environmental Aspects and Impacts Register. This will help you determine whether your company has a negative effect on the environment.

Use these four steps to complete your register and improve the effect your company has on the environment.

Are you responsible for compiling your SHE file?

Are you struggling to keep up-to-date with all the paperwork?
Do you waste your time formatting all the documents?
Are you stressed out about all your legal requirements?

Of course you are. You have enough on your plate already, and keeping up with paperwork isn't on the top of your to-do list. But unfortunately, it's part of your job because it's a legal requirement. And, you've answered 'YES' to at least half of the questions above.

Four steps to complete your Environmental Aspects and Impacts Register

The Health and Safety Advisor says the point of the Environmental Aspects and Impacts Register is to identify the environmental aspects of your business. You must look at how these effect the natural environment around your business.

Follow these four steps to ensure you don't take hours to put your register together:

Step one: You must identify your main business activities

Have a brainstorm meeting with other managers in your business. Together, you must identify and write down your business's main activities. An example of these activities could be:
- General office activities;
- Receiving raw materials;
- Manufacturing chemicals;
- Storing the finished chemicals;
- Delivering the chemicals;
- Etc.

Step two: Identify the environmental aspects within your business activities
You must look at what part of your main business activates processes have environmental aspects. For example, if you load your chemicals for delivery and they spill into the spoil.

From step two, you must start to look for the direct effects your company has on the environment…

Step three and four for completing your Environmental Aspects and Impacts Register

Step three: Identify the impact your environmental aspects have on the environment

You need to look carefully at the environmental aspects of your activities and see how they impact the environment.  For example, will the chemicals you spilled cause soil pollution or water pollution?

Step four: Identify how bad the environmental impact is

You must see if the environmental impact is minor or major. For example, will the soil pollution your chemicals caused spread to or affect a wider area? You should rate these environmental risks according to a risk matrix.

Use these four steps to identify your company's environmental aspects and impacts and then take steps to control the effect your business's environmental safety.
