Many companies use security cameras to secure their premises. If you're one of these companies, make sure you comply with the Privacy Act.
Here's what the Privacy Act says about security cameras in the workplace
You can have cameras where employees can't reasonably expect privacy. For example, you can have them in reception, but not at a change room, says the Health & Safety Advisor.
Make sure you have a sign in your workplace that states the area is monitored with surveillance cameras.
Warning: If you don't have this sign, you can't use any video footage as evidence. Worse still, you could end up with a hefty fine or jail time for not complying with the Act.
Remember, you're required to inform employees and visitors of potential risks and hazards on your site. Safety signs are a good way to communicate these risks and hazards.
While you have a duty to keep your employees safe, you also have a duty to comply with the Privacy Act if you use security cameras to keep your premises secure.
