Are your company toolbox talks stuck in a rut? Consider these topics...

by , 29 November 2013
It's your responsibility to constantly update the health and safety training of your staff. And that's why you conduct weekly toolbox talks. But what do you do if you've already covered the obvious ones - fire safety, evacuation plans, and first aid? We have some suggestions...

So you've done toolbox talks on the basics. Your staff knows exactly what's expected of them when it comes to emergency drills, handling dangerous machinery correctly and even knows how to report incidents to you.

But health and safety training is about so much more.

If you've run out of ideas of what next to cover on yours, consider these…

Consider these toolbox talk topics if you're hard pressed for ideas…

The Health and Safety Advisor suggests you also do toolbox talks on:

  • Cell phones: This because studies show that cell phones (they light-up when either switched on or when they ring) release enough energy to provide a spark that could ignite a fire. You need to ensure your employees are aware of the danger.
  • Back care: After all, learning how to care for your back and spine will increase your productivity, reduce medical expenses and give your staff a happier, healthier future.
  • Water burns: Whether your employees work with water or just have the ability to burn themselves on the office kettle, hot water burns can cause grievous harm to exposed skin and can even go through your clothing and harm your skin underneath. These burns can be so bad people end up in hospital, sometimes on the verge of death. Your toolbox talk can avoid this by showing people how to handle hot water.

You should also consider training your staff on:

  • Footwear;
  • Static Electricity;
  • Low Blood Pressure;
  • Office doors;
  • Your kidneys,
  • The office staircase and much more…
