Conducting a toolbox talk on fire safety? Use this practical example to get your point across

by , 30 April 2014
A fire in your workplace can cost you millions in damages. It will stop production indefinitely and you could lose your business all together. But the good news is, you can help reduce the risk of fire if you train your employees on fire safety. If you're not sure of how to do this, this practical example will help you get your point across during a fire safety toolbox talk.

Are you wasting valuable time figuring out which Toolbox Talks to train your employees on?

Stop!

There's an easier way to choose your health and safety toolbox topics. Here's how to save your time and still be compliant with the OHS Act.

Use this example to show the importance of guarding against fires

The Health & Safety Advisor recommends you use this example when doing a toolbox talk on fire safety:

Jack liked to sneak out for a smoke during his shift.

Although he knew he was only allowed to smoke in the designated smoking area, he didn't like walking the distance. It took about five minutes to get to the smoking area from where he worked. The designated smoking area had no shelter.

So on rainy and windy days, he didn't want to take the walk.

Jack thought he was very clever, because he found a small alcove between the gas tank and the waste disposal area that was undercover. Nobody was ever in that area, so Jack made it his private personal smoking lounge.

One day, without thinking, Jack threw his cigarette butt down on the ground and went back to his workplace. The wind blew his cigarette into the waste heaped up next to the gas tank and started a fire. This caused a massive explosion and employees in the surrounding buildings got injured.

So what can your employees learn from this example?

Do your employees know about the different fire equipment?

If a fire breaks out in your building, would your employees know what to do or how to use the fire extinguisher?

Toolbox talk on fire safety: Here's what this example will teach your employees

From this practical example, your employees can learn about the dangers of fires and the importance of following safety rules.

You must tell your employees to not act like Jack. Tell them to do the following to guard against fires:

  • Smoke in designated areas;
  • Put out their cigarette and throw the butt into an ashtray; and
  • Never smoke in an area where there's a combination of heat, fuel and oxygen as this increases the risk of fire.

There you have it. This'll help you get your point across when doing a toolbox talk on fire safety. In turn, it'll ensure employees understand the dangers of fire and how to reduce the risks.
