A number of infectious diseases can be spread from one person to another by contaminated hands, particularly gastrointestinal infections, influenza and hepatitis A. Washing your hands properly can help prevent the spread of organisms that cause these diseases. How can you make your employees aware of this? As mentioned, you must conduct toolbox talks on the importance of washing hands.

But where do you start? How do you go about doing this?

Tell your employees the following when conducting toolbox talks on washing hands

Tell your employees that their health can deteriorate if they ingest harmful substances or germs and bacteria. In more severe cases, it could even result in death.

Make them aware that the things they touch everyday could be harmful. These include:

  • Shopping trolleys, rubbish bins, floors, walls, doors, hand rails, tools, office equipment, toilet seats and hand basins; and
  • Basically anything someone else has touched or used before you.

To protect themselves, they should wash their hands.

Here's how your employees can protect themselves from infectious diseases

The Toolbox Talks Kit recommends you tell your employees the following:

  • 20 seconds of scrubbing with soap and water can keep you from getting sick. So try counting slowly to 20.
  • Keep a sanitizer in the bag or pocket, for when you touch something that could be dirty and use it to sanitise your hands.
  • Wear protective equipment when working with harmful substances.

You must stress to your employees the importance of washing hands.

Tell them that germs can survive on anything they touch for hours. According to the Centre for Disease Control, viruses and bacteria can live on surfaces like tables and doorknobs for two hours or longer.

But with regular hand washing, they can protect themselves from infectious diseases. Tell them to wash their hands and their children's hands to keep those germs away from their body.

Now that you know what to cover when conducting toolbox talks on the importance of washing hands, make sure you train your employees.
