Haven't done a toolbox talk on PPE? Conduct one today and tell your employees the following nine things...

by , 07 April 2014
You have a legal duty to provide Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) and to ensure your employees wear it. Over and above this, you MUST also train your employees on the proper use and maintenance of PPE. The best way to do this is to conduct a toolbox talk. Here's what to tell your employees when you do a toolbox talk on PPE.

What to cover when doing a toolbox talk on PPE

When conducting a toolbox talk on PPE, tell employees to NOT be an 'it'll never happen to me' believer.

Tell them that this kind of thinking is dangerous as injuries and health problems can happen to anyone, at any time.

Tell them that their 'it'll never happen to me' thinking must change to, 'it hasn't happened to me YET, BUT, today could be the day it does'.

And that's why it's important that they wear their PPE whenever they need to protect themselves against possible injury or exposure to things that can harm their health.

You must stress to your employees that you've given them PPE to protect themselves against harm and if they don't wear it, they could get a terrible injury and could even die.

8 Ways to get your employees to wear their PPE

When doing a toolbox talk on PPE, don't forget to tell your employees these nine things

The Health & Safety Advisor outlines the nine things you should tell employees about PPE:

  1. You're given PPE so you're protected against harm.
  2. Your PPE is a barrier between yourself and things that can harm you.
  3. Always wear your PPE.
  4. Check your PPE before you use it. Make sure it fits properly.
  5. Inspect your PPE every time you use it. Make sure it isn't damaged.
  6. Replace damaged PPE immediately. Don't delay; it could save your life today.
  7. Keep your PPE clean all the time.
  8. Store you PPE in a safe place when you don't need to wear it.
  9. Don't share PPE.

Overall, when you conduct your toolbox talk on PPE, tell your employees to always believe the worst can happen; and that they must wear their PPE so it doesn't.
