Health and safety legal register: Make sure your software training programme includes the following...

by , 20 January 2014
Your health and safety legal register is vital to enforce health and safety in your workplace. And that's why you NEED training to understand it properly. Make sure your software training programme includes the following...

You and any staff member (expected to use and maintain your legal register) require training to use the health and safety legal register itself and the software installed to manage it.

The consultant you contract to compile your legal register will provide courses. These will:

  • Focus on the composition of your legal register.
  • Help you integrate it into the legal register user's management systems. You need to implement and manage the legal requirements you've identified in your workplace.
  • Enable your legal register users to achieve and maintain compliance by:
  1. Creating an awareness of the prevailing risks
  2. Getting commitment from all your employees
  3. Ensuring awareness and understanding of your company's legal requirements
  4. Assigning responsibilities to competent responsible people in your company
  • Assist your register users to address the above needs. Your contractor must offer a customised Legal Register Induction and Guidance Session (Workshop). This workshop will aim to ensure your register users understand the full impact and implications of your company's legal requirements and responsibilities.

Here's what to include in your software training programme

The Health & Safety Advisor says your software training programme must include the following:

  1. Enough time to cater to all your users' needs, and the times at which they'll be available for training.
  2. Practical guidance on the legal register, how to deal with the register programme in detail, its functions, features, options, how to complete changeable fields and how to compile and print reports.
  3. Training on understanding the requirements for legal compliance management, interpretation of the law, self regulation and liability.
  4. Explanations of the contents of the legal register. This includes each piece of legislation in your legal register, the legal duties they impose and the penalties which you could receive for non-compliance.
  5. Explanation of documents and self-assessment checklists.
  6. Examples of systems you must implement to fulfill the legal obligations.
  7. A focus on linking responsibilities to certain employees, linking risk and general notes and comments to optimise the effectiveness of the register.

Including the above mentioned things in your software training programme will help ensure you and your employees understand how to use the legal register.
