Petrochemicals specialist Saide Mansur recently explained that in order for companies to manage the risks, they need to understand that they have to manage the health and safety knowledge retention.

Here's what that means. And why it's important for you.

Safety knowledge retention is a conversation!

Saide Mansur explained to sheqafrica.com, that one of thecrucial elements in health and safety is a knowledge retention programme that listens to your employees and measures the effectiveness of your interventions.

To do that: Each time you organise and participate in a health and safety session, ask yourself:   'Do my employees get the health and safety message?'

And even if they do get the message, how come incidents and injuries still take place?

To solve this, his team launched a Knowledge Retention Programme.

They moved away from system maintenance and began to analyse safety training effectiveness.

It was the missing link in their health and safety programme.  Here are the objectives of the newly implemented programme:

[] Assess the current health, safety, environmental, and security knowledge of field employees, at all crafts, supervision and foreman levels.

[] Assess the effectiveness of the communication media used: Powerpoint slides, toolbox talks, LMRA (last minute risk assessments), incidents LL sharing, and other media.

[] Create and allow opportunity to educate the workforce in refresher programmes.

[] Get the confidential views of the workforce, at different levels of site teams, on health and safety measures. Rreview and analyse the responses, and share areas of improvement. with management To achieve this, we used a validated perception survey.

This programme has helped Mansur's team to identify what wasn't working properly what was.

It alsogave them "a more proactive focused approach" and made them understand that in this regard they're all a big team putting effort into the health and safety system.

"Individual and collective skills and communication are major components of risk, and both are manageable", Mansur explained.

Communication is key and should be set as a tool in this perspective as well. Worker participation is needed and the message has to be transported on a two-way route! Keep that in mind when developing your company's health and safety system.
