Here's what absenteeism is really costing you
Say you have an employee named Mary. She's the 1 out of 4 employees who's actually
sick from your company. She's a very productive, hard worker in your company.
You pay Mary R20 000 a month, but then she's sick for 10 days of the year. So in fact, you pay Mary on average, R9 523 per year, when she's not even at work. I'll show you later how we get to this calculation.
You get Fiona to replace her while she's sick. But have you ever stopped to consider how less productive Fiona is? After all, Fiona will only do the job 10 days out of the entire year? It doesn't compare to Mary who does it all the time.
So, this means, not only are you paying:
· Mary her normal salary when she's sick - approximately R9 523;
· Fiona her salary to fill in for absent Mary - also another R9 523;
