Is it sick leave when an employee goes to a clinic or doctor for regular check-ups?

Here's this week's top question from the LabourandHRClub.co.za asked by one of our readers.

Is it sick leave when an employee goes to a clinic or doctor for regular check-ups?
Asked on labourandhrclub

Can you share how other companies authorise paid sick leave when an employee needs to visit the clinic or doctor for routine appointments? For example, to collect medication, monthly check-ups due to a chronic condition, etc. and is it standard practice to award this?

My concern is that when an employee takes 1 day paid sick leave per month for these routine visits they don't have any paid sick leave available when they really need it.

Also, the fact that they're "technically" not really sick - they either collect medication or have a routine check-up.

Please advise.
