Performance reviews: Three tips to motivate your employee to improve their performance

One of the most challenging parts of a performance review is when you give your employee feedback. Many times it can be misunderstood and cause unnecessary tension in your company. Make sure this isn't the case with your employees. Use these three tips to motivate your employee to improve their performance.

The only way your employees will get better at what they do is when you give sincere and timely performance feedback, says the Practical Guide to Human Resources Management.

Without good feedback, your employees will carry on doing the wrong thing and stop your company from performing efficiently.

Another great thing about giving feedback is you can use the platform to motivate your employees to perform better.

How do you do this?

Use these three tips to motivate your employee to improve to their performance

#1: Judge your employee's level of understanding. Ask him to describe the problem, the impact and his suggestions to fix it;

#2: Encourage your employee. Assure him you'll be there to support him in his efforts to improve his performance; and

#3: Hold regular follow-up sessions to remind him you're interested and supportive.

Note: Don't confuse a feedback session with a disciplinary session.

Make sure your feedback session is a positive and nonthreatening process. Make every effort to ensure your employee isn't defensive when you give him feedback.

Make sure he's clear on what's wrong with his performance. And ensure he's largely motivated to try and reach the improvement goals you've identified together.

The bottom line: The only way you'll motivate your employee's to improve their performance is to give feedback. Make regular feedback sessions a part of your management style. Foster an environment in which giving and receiving feedback is the norm.
