Two more steps you need to take to effectively manage performance

Step #1: Give your employee the tools and training he needs

After you tell your employee about his job description (the first step of performance management), you must give him the tools to do the job, says the Labour Law for Managers Loose Leaf Service.

In addition, conduct informal performance appraisals throughout this time to help your employee understand and learn about the products and systems he needs to use. Also make sure you get feedback on his performance on a daily or weekly basis.

Step #2: Give him the opportunity to perform

After you've given your employee his job description and explained all the aspects of it to him and given him the necessary training and instruction, he's ready to perform the job. So give him a chance to show you what he's got.

During this time, monitor him as much as possible and give him feedback so he can get up to speed quickly. This will also allow you to address problems before they become serious issues.

Don't forget to tell your employee that after this, you'll hold a formal appraisal to evaluate his performance.
