If your company's PPE is costing you a fortune, this could be the reason why...

by , 15 August 2014
Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) is expensive. For good quality safety wear, you can easily spend R5 000 on one employee.

But if your company's PPE is costing more than that, it could be because there's a problem in the way you manage it.

If you feel like your health and safety budget almost all goes to PPE, here's why that may be the case...

If PPE is costing your company too much it could be because of poor management

If you want to determine whether or not there's a problem in the way you manage your company's PPE, ask yourself these three questions:

1. Do you let employees take their PPE home?
2. Do your employees wash and maintain their PPE?
3. Did you invest in good quality PPE?

If you answered 'no' to any of these questions, there's definitely a problem in the way you manage you PPE. That's why it costs you so much. But don't worry. You can reverse this problem and turn that budget drain into a safety money saver.

Do you have more than 20 employees?

Don't ignore this health and safety obligation or else!

The DoL will slap you with a R50 000 fine or 1 year in jail if you don't have a health and safety representative.

Here's how to save money on your PPE expenses

1. Don't let employees take their PPE home
You must give your employees a place at work to store their PPE. This way, you can ensure it won't suddenly go missing and you won't have to replace it.

2. Train your employees to clean and maintain their own PPE
If your employees take care of their PPE, it'll last longer. This means you won't need to replace it as often and that's a great way to save money.

3. Invest in good quality PPE
Good quality PPE may cost you a bit more but it'll also last longer. This means you don't need to replace it as often.

Your employees' protective clothing doesn't have to cost your company an arm and a leg. Just manage it correctly and save some money.
