This is the single best way to prevent your employees from damaging their PPE

by , 25 August 2014
Your employees must take responsibility for their personal protective equipment (PPE) and look after it.

Unfortunately, employees don't always uphold that responsibility and their protective clothing ends up damaged. This drains your pocket because your company must fork out to replace it.

But there's an easy way you can prevent this problem...

This is what you must do to prevent your employees from damaging their PPE

Your disciplinary code is your best friend when it comes to enforcing your workplace rules. This applies to all your health and safety rules - especially your PPE.

After all, even though it's theirs to use while they work for you, your employees' PPE is still company property.

This means if they damage it, it counts as damage to company property. You can, therefore, discipline, or even dismiss your employee if he damages PPE intentionally.

This is the best way to ensure your employees don't damage their PPE. They're more likely to take care of it and use it properly if they know damaging it will get them in trouble.

Just ensure you give your employee what they need so they can do this...

Train your employees on how to use and look after their PPE so they can follow the rules

You must give your employees training on how to use their safety gear correctly and on how to take care of it. Otherwise, they may break your rules without meaning to. In this situation, punishing them is unfair.

So train your employees to use and look after their PPE and include the punishment for not doing so in your disciplinary code.
