Your first step in creating a relationship between employees and their PPE

by , 25 August 2014
If you just give someone a tool and tell them to use it without telling them how or why, they'll probably just put it down and walk away. After all, how can you expect someone to use a tool that they don't know how to use and what to use it on?

It's the same with PPE. Why would you just give your employees personal protective equipment and say 'Wear it'? Yes, they may know to put a hard hat on their head or gloves on their hands, but they won't know when or why they need to wear this protective clothing.

So do this one thing to create that relationship between your employees and their PPE and get them using it the right way...

Here's how to create a relationship between your employees and their PPE and get them using it

You must train your employees on the 'Hows' and 'Whys' of their PPE. This way, they'll understand details like when you want them to use it and why.

In your employees' training, you must cover:

- The situations when your employees must wear the different pieces of PPE;
- What the PPE is for. You must explain how it protects them. This gives your employees the 'why' of their PPE;
- The punishment for not using or looking after their PPE;
- Where they must store their PPE; and
- How they must clean and look after their PPE.

This will ensure your employees understand their PPE and the role it plays in keeping them safe.

But don't forget to ensure your employees understand their PPE responsibilities.

Ensure your employees understand their PPE responsibility

When you give your employees their PPE, ensure they sign for it. Tell them that this means this safety gear is theirs while they're under your employment. And they now have a responsibility to look after and use their safety gear as you explained in their training.

This will help you create and cement your employees' relationship with their PPE.
