Revealed: Three basic principles around grievances

Principle #1: Resolve grievances as close to the source of the problem as possible.

It's also a good idea to tell employees to lodge complaints as close to the source as possible. Make it clear that failure to do so undermines the authority of your managers and leaves them severely disillusioned.

Principle #2: Deal with grievances quickly.

Quick resolution leaves everyone much happier and helps to facilitate relationships – thus swiftly getting everyone back to work and being productive again. It's also a good practice to resolve issues as soon as possible.

Principle #3: Have clear guidelines on how you deal with grievances.

The Practical Guide to Human Resources Management says underlying all of these principles is knowledge and communication. All your employees must know that there's a grievance procedure and how to use it. Managers must also be clear on what to do when an employee lodges a grievance.

Another important point is that grievances aren't about salary increases, but are about relationships, systems and incidents. If you don't resolve them, these fester and create negative energy in the workplace which is the last thing you want.

Knowing the three basic principles around grievances will help ensure you deal with employee complaints effectively.
