What to do if your employee isn't complying with your company's dress code

by , 16 January 2014
One of the problems many employers have to put up with is employees who don't comply with their company's dress code. If you have a similar problem, read on to find out what you need to do when an employee goes against your company's dress code.

There's a solution to dealing with employees who don't comply with your dress code.

Do this if your employee doesn't comply with your company's dress code

If you need to discuss how an employee is dressed, use your official dress policy to back up the discussion, says the Practical Guide to Human Resources Management.

Set up a one-on-one counselling meeting with your employee to address the issue.

If your employee doesn't change the way he dresses, you can take disciplinary action, for non-compliance to company policies and procedures.

Remember to follow the correct procedure when disciplining your employee. And bear in mind that it'll be difficult to act against your employee if you haven't defined what an acceptable dress code in your office is.

That's why it's important to have a dress code policy in place

It ensures that employees know your company's dress code and you can use it when your employee's dressed inappropriately and you need to take action.

If you don't have a dress code policy in your company and want to create one, be sure to consider these factors:

  • The culture of your company
  • Whether or not male employees must wear ties
  • What's inappropriate to wear
  • Whether or not you'll allow tattoos and body piercings
  • Whether or not it's fair to expect some employees to be more formally dressed than others
  • Who will pay for a uniform
  • Casual Fridays
