Registering and deregistering for Provisional Tax: Two processes you must follow

by , 16 March 2015
When it comes to paying provisional tax, not everyone has to do it. But if you do, you need to register with the taxman to do this. If, however, provisional tax no longer applies to you, you must deregister with SARS so it doesn't come after you for late payment.

Today, we explain the process for doing both.

First, let's look at the process of provisional tax registration

SARS has made it easy for you to register for provisional tax. All you need to do is log into the SARS efiling system, and do the following once logged in:

1) Click on the 'home' button

2) Under the 'user' heading on the left, click on the 'tax types' option.

3) You'll have a number of different taxes listed in the main window. Find 'Provisional Tax'.

4) Check the box to the left of 'Provisional Tax' heading.

5) Input your income tax number, select the SARS branch closest to you or your business

6) Scroll to the bottom of the page and click on the 'Register' button.

Once all this is completed, you'll have to wait 24 to 48 hours for the SARS systems to approve and make the provisional tax returns available to you.

This process is easy, sincethere are no forms or any other form of communication  required bySARS.

Keep in mind that individual taxpayers should check chapter P01 on provisional tax to find out if they need to register. All companies, corporations and trusts must always be registered.

Here's what to do in case you want to deregister for provisional tax

The good news is that deregistration is just as easy as registering.

All you have to do is to follow the same procedures once logged into SARS efiling, except you'll just uncheck the box to the left of the 'Provisional Tax' heading.

Click the 'Register' button at the bottom of the page, and provisional tax will be deactivated

Make sure you don't deregister from provisional tax unless you're sure all your provisional returns have been submitted! The option to submit provisional returns is removed within SARS efiling when you deregister.
