The 22 checks you should cover in a reference check

When doing a reference check, you may not check every single one of these points. This will depend on the position and how high profile it is, but it's still a good idea to cover as many as possible:
 
1. Criminal record;
2. Driver's licence and driving records;
3. Credit history;
4. Employment details;
5. Education records;
6. Qualifications;
7. Professional credentials and memberships;
8. Employment references;
9. Character references ;
10. Gaps in employment history;
11. Identity or passport numbers;
12. Address and telephone contact details;
13. Directorships;
14. Citizenship, immigration, or legal working status;
15. Open media searches;
16. Security clearance checks;
17. Litigation records;
18. Drug tests;
19. Psychometric testing;
20. Licensing, patent or copyright records;
21. Medical status; and
22. Military records.

Don't break the law while completing reference checks

The Practical Guide to Human Resources for Managers says you have to ask the candidate's permission before you can do a reference check or background check for employment.
 
State this is part of your hiring process in your job advertisement. Ask candidates to complete a permission form, which allows you to do the check background and employment references. Lastly, contact shortlisted candidates and tell them that as part of the final process you have questions to ask their references.
