Chances are you've heard about a health and safety risk management audit. But do you really know what it's about and how it'll help you? Read on to find out.

Don't know what a health and safety risk management audit is? If so, here's an explanation for you…

What you NEED to know about a health and safety risk management audit

The Health & Safety Advisor says this type of audit evaluates your safety risk management systems to see if you comply with the relevant law, your company-specific risk profile and company's standard requirements.

Your audit must:

  • Determine your level of compliance with the legal requirements applicable to your business;
  • Determine your level of compliance with risk management and health and safety requirements;
  • Establish how effective your risk management system is;
  • Establish if your health and safety system has room for improvement;
  • Assess the ability of the implemented health and safety system to ensure future compliance;
  • Acknowledge progress in system implementation since the previous audit;
  • Provide auditor's knowledge on best practices;
  • Determine the status of your implemented system through a standardised quantification system; and
  • Demonstrate management commitment.

A health and safety risk management audit must be done by a competent team of people with a good understanding of an effective health and safety risk management system.

Each person must have sound knowledge of the necessary legal requirements and understand the type of industry they're in and the industry health and safety risk profile.

You can put an audit team together and do a self-audit in preparation for an external or third party audit.

Important:  You should never audit your own system for an extended period of time. It's critical to involve a competent third party audit team to determine and confirm the status of your health and safety risk management system.

Know that you know what a health and safety risk management audit is and how it'll benefit your company, make sure you comply.
