SARS has a lot of power when it comes to getting the tax you owe it. It can investigate, seize and take money you owe it without your permission.

Now when SARS plays by the rules this isn't a problem. It's when it start to act outside of the rules that it becomes a problem.

For example, if you pay all of your company taxes and, as far as you know, you don't owe SARS anything. Then suddenly, you see SARS has deducted R80 000 out of your account.

This is the action you must take if SARS suddenly deducts money out of your account

 
You must contact SARS immediately and get a statement of account. You can also access this on SARS Efiling. 
 
You must get a statement of account for both your income tax and Vat and see if you owed any outstanding money to SARS.
 
Unfortunately, SARS can deduct money from your bank account if you owe it money. But it must communicate with you beforehand. 
 
If you don't respond, SARS can proceed to recover any outstanding taxes straight from your account. So check to see if there were any attempts from SARS to contact you. 
 
SARS must prove you owed it money and it tried to contact you to get the money you owe it.
 
If it can't, here's what you must do.

If SARS can't prove you owed it money and it tried to contact you, you can take it to court. SARS may have a lot of power, but it doesn't have the right to steal money from you if you don't owe it.
 
So if this happens to you, take action immediately!
