Here's how to register for PAYE, SDL and UIF

All you have to do to apply for PAYE/SDL/UIF is to complete an EMP101 form.

You must submit this form to SARS with supplementary documents as stated on the registration form.

The Practical Tax Loose Leaf Service says SARS will request the following registration information:

  • An ID number in the case of an individual;
  • Registered entity number in the case of a corporation;
  • Registered Trust number in the case of a Trust;
  • Passport number and country of origin in the case of a foreign individual;
  • Partnership name and ID/registration number and legal name of the main partner in the case of a partnership; or
  • A registered name and nature of person in the case of entities not registered with a regulatory body.

If you're not sure if you should apply for PAYE, SDL and UIF, remember that you're obliged to register for employees' tax purposes if you pay remuneration to an employee who is liable for normal tax.

Also bear in mind that you must pay PAYE within seven days after the end of the month during which you deducted the amount, says SARS.

'If the last day for payment falls on a public holiday or weekend, the payment must be made on the last business day prior to the public holiday or weekend.'

Knowing how to register for PAYE, SDL and UIF will help ensure your registration process runs smoothly.
