Want to verify that your supplier is registered for Vat? Use SARS' Vat vendor search tool

by , 08 April 2014
SARS requires you to include the Vat registration number of the recipient of goods or services on any tax invoice you issue. If you want to ensure your supplier is really registered for Vat, use SARS' Vat vendor search tool to verify the Vat number so you can issue tax invoices correctly. Here's how the Vat vendor search tool works.

What's the Vat vendor search tool?

The Vat vendor search has been designed to help you verify that your supplier or client is really registered with SARS.

As you know, SARS wants you to include the Vat registration number of the recipient of goods or services on any tax invoice issued.

SARS designed the Vat vendor search tool to help you with this.

SARS explains in its website that the list of vendors registered for Vat is included in the Vat vendor search as an extended search or a web service.

'This information is only available to vendors who are registered with eFiling. However, the search function to verify whether persons who supply goods and/or services are registered for Vat is still available to business enterprises and members of the public,' says SARS.

SARS adds that if it doesn't have the correct particulars of an enterprise on record, 'the Vat vendor search may indicate the vendor isn't registered and any tax invoice issued to other vendors or tourists may be rejected.'

Registering for Vat allows you to claim input tax back on Vat returns. To register for Vat your business must meet four requirements.

Here's how to use the Vat vendor search tool to verify that your supplier is registered with SARS

Dryk-Fnancial-Services.com explains that to be able to do this search, you would need at least one of the following details.

  • The Vat registration number, if you know that or received it from a client or supplier.
  • The trading name of the business.

Important: SARS says it updates the database weekly. 'Consequently, where vendors are newly registered, the number being searched may not yet appear.' So keep this in mind when doing your search.

The bottom line:  It's important to issue tax invoices correctly. And checking that your supplier is registered is the first step to doing this. So make use of SARS' Vat vendor search tool.
