2 Tactics to ensure your employees follow your health and safety rules

by , 15 April 2016
You hear it being said over and over again, that you have to look out for the health and safety of your employees. And that failure to do so will lead to hefty penalties and fines.

Now, while this may be true, it's not to say that you are the only one who has an obligation. Your employees do too. In other words, you can put safety measures in place for them, but it's also their responsibility to adhere to them.

Tactic#1: Include a health and safety clause in your employment contracts

It's very important to ensure that your employees are fully aware of their health and safety duties, before they start working for you.

This can be done by including a health and safety clause, in your employment contracts, that clearly states any failure to adhere by your health and safety rules will result in disciplinary action and possibly dismissal.

Doing this can definitely help ensure your employees stick to your health and safety rules.

Tactic#2: Emphasise the consequences

Make it clear to your employees that not complying with your health and safety rules can lead to harsh consequences.

Tell them that if an inspector, from the Department of Labour (DoL), finds them to be guilty of negligence, they could receive a fine of R50 000, or jail time, or even both!

*Those were 2 simple strategies you can use to get your employees to adhere to your health and safety rules.

Always remember that health and safety in the workplace is a joint effort, and not just your responsibility. Make sure your employees clearly understand that.
