An internal safety audit could save your company!

by , 15 August 2014
Do you know what happens if a DoL inspector arrives at your workplace and finds you guilty of non-compliance?

Well, let me tell you.

At best, you're looking at prohibitions and serious fines. At worst, you're looking at a company shut down and even jail time.

This doesn't have to be your fate though. You can avoid the doom of the DoL inspection by ensuring your company complies with all the OHS Act laws.

How do you do this? With an internal safety audit of course...

An internal safety audit is the best way to avoid DoL disaster

The aim of a safety audit is to check for problems in your health and safety programme. It can also help you determine your level of compliance.

This is what a DoL inspection or audit will do. He'll check if you've done your job as an employer to keep your employees safe.

Luckily, there are ways you can pre-empt and prevent the problems that may result in serious punishment from the DoL.

Are you complying with the OHSAS 18001?

Are you 100% compliant? How can you be sure?

Here's what to check for during your safety audit

1. Check your health and safety records and documents
The DoL inspector will want to check these so you must too. Ensure you have all the right records and everything's where it should be.

2. Check the condition of your machinery and safety equipment
You must ensure everything is in good working condition. If the DoL inspector finds your machinery a health and safety risk and your safety equipment ineffective, he'll punish you.

A DoL inspector can question any of your employees and they have to answer truthfully. You should try doing the same to find out if there are any problems one of your employees may feel the need to tell the inspector about.

Getting in trouble with the DoL could destroy your company. But a simple internal safety audit first can save it.
