As our year winds down to a close, your employees' minds are probably already adrift. They're in 'holiday mode', not focusing on the tasks at hand and that's when more accidents happen! You should take extra precautions at this time of year to prevent this because an increase in your accident rate can cost your business!

Let's look at just five of the costs you can face, all because your employees are thinking of going on leave…

If you operate any machinery in your workplace, GMR Schedule D or C must be in clear view for employees to see. This will be the first thing the inspector will look out for when he's paying an unscheduled visit to your workplace.  If you are missing these summaries, he will slap you with a fine. Don't get caught without them.

Five losses you can incur if you don't prevent accidents

1.    Medical and rehabilitation costs
Your COID tariff can increase if you have too many accidents. Also the compensation commissioner may not pay, which means you'll have to pay for the medical costs from your own pocket if your employee loses a limb and needs rehabilitation (e.g. physiotherapy, wheelchair etc.). See Chapter C15 and C16 of your Health and Safety Advisor for more on COID.

2.    Pension and other payments
Your employee might have to go on early pension because he's been incapacitated. You might even have to pay out a lump sum of money to him.

3.     Salary/Wages
You'll still be paying wages to an employee while they're recuperating from an accident. You may even have to pay a temporary worker to take over the injured employees duties while he's away.

4.    Legal fees
The Department of Labour (DoL) could take you to court over the incident, which could cost you thousands. If you're taken to court or the DoL starts an inquiry, you might have to pay an expert to represent you.

5.    Penalties and fines
These are costs you may incur if the DoL decides to fine you for allowing the accident to happen.

No one wants to deal with these extra costs. So don't let it happen to you! Make sure your employees are paying attention at all times.
