Compensation for Occupational Injuries and Diseases (COID) is a government body that compensates workers who become injured. It safeguards your workers, and ensures you assist in supporting their compensation towards injured employees (through tariffs).
So if you hire any employees, you're required to register with COID. And failing to do so will lead to harsh penalties and fines.
However, if you have contractors working for you, such as cleaners, security guards, electricians, and plumbers, then they are required to register for COID. And so if any of them become injured on duty or contracts an occupational disease, then the contracting company will have to process the COID claim.
But if for some reason the contractor isn't registered or hasn't paid their tariff, your company will be liable for the claim!

Before hiring any contractors, you need to request that they present their COID registration number as well as a copy of their COID Letter of Good Standing
from the Commissioner. Once received, keep the information in a file for that particular contractor.
This will protect you from any unnecessary liability for if a contractor becomes injured.
The key here is to take the initiative! Follow up on contractors, before hiring them, and ensure that your contractors are registered for COID, and that they are paying their tariffs, otherwise you'll be taking a big risk, which could result in you being liable for them.
