Dear Reader

Yesterday we spoke about the number of Work-Related Muskoskeletal Disorders in the workplace because of working on computers. I bet you wondered how ergonomics applies to you in a factory? Or on a construction site?  Ergonomics even affects your forklift drivers! Did you know that this is part of keeping your employees safe, which you have to do by law (OHSAct)?

Your injured-on-duty employees can claim thousands from the compensation fund. It costs you in medical expenses and in employee absenteeism too. Take our quick ergonomic quiz below to see your employees are safe thanks to good ergonomics in your workplace.

EVERY incident and injury must be reported

No matter how big or small the incident/injury or accident is, it must be reported.

Make it every supervisor and managers responsibility. It doesn't have to be a stressful experience.

Use our Incident/Injury Report Form to make sure ALL the details are reported and recorded. It also includes an Investigation Checklist to complete with each person involved in the accident.

But only when you order the Health and Safety Advisor

Do you have good ergonomic practices in your factory? Take our quiz to see if you would pass…

A quick recap…Ergonomics is the science of fitting job functions to the physical capabilities of the human body. Your employees can suffer musculoskeletal disorders if they try doing a job that they can't do. Take our quick ergonomics quiz. If you can answer yes to all these questions, your employees are implementing good practice ergonomics.

Ergonomic Quiz
  1. Do your employees use trolleys to move loads?
  2. Do your employees mix raw materials together at waist level?
  3. Are there armrests at your sorting trays, and are they tiled towards your employee?
  4. Do your employees use Unilift to hoist your pallets to waist level?

Don't stop yet, here are four more questions you must answer yes to…

Are you responsible for compiling your SHE file?

Are you struggling to keep up-to-date with all the paperwork?

Do you waste your time formatting all the documents?

Are you stressed out about all your legal requirements?

Of course you are. You have enough on your plate already, and keeping up with paperwork isn't on the top of your to-do list. But unfortunately, it's part of your job because it's a legal requirement. And, you've answered 'YES' to at least half of the questions above.

Four more questions to answer…
  1. Do your employees use mechanical aids to limit the bending they do?
  2. Do drivers take regular breaks when driving long distances?
  3. Do your employees wear safety boots, and make sure the surfaces aren't slippery?
  4. Do your drivers climb out of their trucks carefully, instead of jumping?

Now, take these eight basic principles and make sure that you are enforcing them. We have a whole chapter on Ergonomics in our Health and Safety Advisor. See Chapter E07/001 for more on how you can prevent injuries and reduce your costs.

Until next time,
