Abrasive wheels or portable grinders are widely used in all types of industry. And serious injury can result if your workers don't follow the safe work procedures relating to their use. Here are five rules your workers can use to reduce injuries when working with portable grinders.

Ensuring that employees select the right wheel when doing work with portable grinders is of critical importance for safety. A wheel is dangerous when used for work it's not designed for, says the Health and Safety Advisor.

This is just one on the safety rules your employees must abide by when using portable grinders.

Five safety rules for using portable grinders at the workplace

#1: An abrasive wheel break can cause a serious injury. Ensure workers conduct a ring test before mounting the wheel and ensure they use the correct wheel for the spindle or application.

#2: Ensure you provide protective guards for your workers. In addition, replace damaged guards as soon as you notice they're not up to standard.

#3: Clean and service grinders according to manufacturers' recommendations. Record all maintenance for grinders.

#4: Ensure a machine can't operate when unattended by checking the dead-man (constant pressure) switch.

#5: Ensure employees wear PPE like safety glasses, goggles and face protection to protect themselves against flying particles. Gloves, aprons, metatarsal safety boots and respiratory protection are also advisable, depending on the work.

Ensure your employees abide by these rules so they can reduce injuries when working with portable grinders.
