Don't have a health and safety communication system in your workplace? Here's why you NEED one!

by , 16 January 2014
You need to implement and maintain an effective health and safety communication system in your workplace. And it's far more important than you think...

Health and safety in your workplace is paramount. How you communicate the regulations of your Occupational Health and Safety programme is equally important.

And that's where an effective health and safety communication system comes in.

Introducing a health and safety communication system at work will do the following:

#1: Create a work climate where you and your employees have the necessary knowledge, skills and motivation to achieve the objectives of the Occupational Health and Safety programme.

Both the communication system and the health and safety programme help prevent loss of life and injuries in the workplace.

#2: Improve the quality of your workplace;

#3: Reduce down-time, which increases productivity; and

#4: Reduce absenteeism. The Health & Safety Advisor says it's been proven that if you involve staff more, they're less likely to stay away and rehabilitation time after an injury is shorter.

Essentially, a good communication system will show your employees you care about their wellbeing as management.

At the same time, you'll realise that, with the correct motivation and knowledge, your workers also contribute significantly to your company's aims and objectives.

Just remember that there are two aspects to a company health and safety communication system

#1: You must comply with all legal requirements. This means you must train your employees in these four specific areas of regulation:

  • Hazardous chemical substances
  • Lead
  • Asbestos
  • Construction

#2: You need practical tools to improve and enhance communication. You can use posters and toolbox talks to increase communication in your workplace.

Well there you have it. Now that you know the significance of a health and safety communication system, implement one today.
