Five ways to meet your health and safety obligations

by , 23 July 2013
As an employer, your primary legal requirement is to ensure your employees are safe. But how do you do this effectively? Here are five tips you can use to ensure you meet all your health and safety requirements.

You must create a work environment in which you and your employees have the necessary knowledge, skills and motivation to achieve the objectives of the Occupational Health and Safety Act (OHSA), says the Health and Safety Advisor.

Luckily, the Health and Safety Advisor has some quick tips you can use to meet all your legal obligations regarding safety in your workplace.

Five effective ways to help you fulfill your health and safety obligations

#1: Carry out induction training. Make sure your employees are aware of the hazards and dangers attached to their work, as well as precautions to take.

#2: Provide specific safe-work procedure training for relevant employees. For example, your employees must know how to use the correct PPE, such as earplugs if noise levels are too high.

#3: Ensure managers are aware of the requirements of the OHSA.

#4: Advise your employees on what equipment is needed, how the equipment must be used or worn and the consequences of not complying. In addition, make your employees aware that a violation of safety measures will result in disciplinary action.

#5: Make sure all your employees are aware of their job descriptions. 'When the job description is explained to each employee it should include a section on Occupational Health and Safety and also the part the employee plays in achieving an incident-free work environment,' says the Health and Safety Advisor.

Use these methods to ensure you meet your health and safety obligations as required by the OHSA.

Turn to chapter O01 of your Health and Safety Training Manual to read more about the training you can provide to your employees so that they can understand their obligations under the Occupational Health and Safety Act
