Four common workplace disasters that could bring your company to its knees

by , 12 September 2014
You may shrug off the idea of a disaster in your workplace. After all, how likely is it that a violent storm is suddenly going to tear your workplace apart?

While we agree that a violent-workplace-destroying storm isn't a common workplace disaster, there are ones that could happen.

Below we list common disasters that could strike at anytime. If you don't prepare for them, they could bring your company to its knees...

Prepare for these four common disaster situations so they don't destroy your company

1. Fire
Workplace fires happen more frequently than anyone would like. Often it's because of a simple fault in your electrical system. One spark can turn into a full blaze before you're able to do anything about it.

2. Strikes
Here in South Africa, strikes are a common part of our socio-economic culture. The problem is that all too often these strikes turn violent. If violent strikers force their way into your workplace and attack employees and damage your property, you'll have to deal with the situation fast.

3. Building collapse
You may think this is an uncommon disaster, but in the last ten years we've had a number of building collapses. There's a lot of concern about the state of South Africa's construction regulations and the quality of buildings.

This could happen to you and you won't even see the danger coming, unless you take steps to prevent it now.

4. Earthquakes
Another seemingly uncommon disaster but with three earthquakes in SA in the last year, this is fast changing. If you consider the hazard of poor construction work in our buildings and combine that with the threat of earthquakes, you realise just how deadly this could be.

These four common workplace disasters may not happen today, next year or ever, but they could. So prepare for them just in case.
