Four high risk occupations that require medical surveillance

The Occupational Health and Safety Act (OHSA) requires you to perform medical surveillance in your company. These are the four high risk occupations that require medical surveillance...

You must perform medical surveillance if you employ animal handlers, food handlers, asbestos workers and motor vehicle operators (drivers).

Medical surveillance: Here's a guidelines of what's required if you employ anyone in one of the above mentioned high risk occupations.

#1: Animal handlers

  • You must give your employees a zoonosis questionnaire and an occupational medical history questionnaire.
  • A medical certificate of fitness is also required.
  • You must conduct a standard medical examination for:
  1. Appropriate biological tests or monitoring
  2. Appropriate inoculations
  3. TB testing

#2: Food handlers

The Health & Safety Advisor says the following is required when doing medical surveillance for food handlers:

  • An occupational medical history questionnaire.
  • Standard medical examination for appropriate biological tests or monitoring such as Hepatitis A, Shigella, Salmonella.
  • Appropriate inoculations
  • Medical certificate of fitness

#3: Asbestos workers

You'll need to the following when doing medical surveillance for food handlers:

  • An asbestos questionnaire
  • An occupational medical history questionnaire
  • Standard medical examination with a special emphasis on respiratory, gastrointestinal and cardiovascular.
  • Chest X-ray.
  • Medical certificate of fitness.

#4: Motor vehicle operators (drivers)

The following is required when doing medical surveillance for drivers:

  • An occupational medical history questionnaire
  • A standard medical examination with a special emphasis on controlled chronic illnesses such as hypertension and diabetes, epilepsy.
  • Have an ECG Electro cardiogram, if necessary and a drug and alcohol screening.
  • Vision screening with a special emphasis on distant vision, depth perception and visual field.
  • Medical certificate of fitness.

If your employees work in any of the above mentioned high risk occupations, make sure you perform medical surveillance to protect your workers.
