Here are the internal and external processes you must follow when there's a serious accident at your workplace

by , 01 September 2014
If there's a serious workplace accident, such as a building collapse, everyone needs to get involved to ensure such an accident doesn't happen again. When I say everyone, I mean you, your employees and the DoL.

You'll take care of things internally and the DoL will investigation things externally.

Both of you will do similar tasks with the aim of coming to similar conclusions.

Here's what'll happen...

Here's what you must do internally after a serious accident

You must do your own accident investigation to determine the cause of the accident. You also need to do this if your employees need to claim from COID.

This process will help you see the possible outcome of the DoL investigation before it even gets there.

Just remember that during your investigation, you can't move or remove any evidence the DoL may need for its inquiry.

You must also ensure employees who need it get the appropriate compensation and treatment.

While you do that, the DoL will get started with its external process.

Here's what the DoL will do after a serious accident

The first thing the DoL will do is set a date for an inquiry into the accident. This is an investigation and hearing into the cause of the accident.

The DoL wants to determine if the accident happened because someone didn't follow legal construction regulations.

This is a criminal offence, especially if the accident resulted in the death of employees.

A DoL inspector will go to the accident scene and collect the evidence he needs. This is why you mustn't remove or move anything.

Together, these internal and externally process will find help you the cause of the accident and ensure you deal with it correctly.
