Here's how to protect your construction workers from a crane accident like the one that occurred in Upington this week

by , 06 November 2014
On Tuesday, a tragic accident happened on a construction site in Upington. A 198m crane fell over while employees were using it to build a new solar plant.

This accident resulted in two deaths and four casualties, of which all are still in a critical condition in hospital.

The sad truth is, accidents like this often happen because of ineffective safety checks.

Here's how to improve these in your workplace so you can prevent a similar accident from killing your employees...

Here's how to improve your safety checks so and prevent a crane accident

You need to do thorough checks on all of your equipment to ensure it's safe. This especially applies to large or dangerous machinery like cranes.

You need to involve members of your health and safety team, such as your HSE representative, to do this.

Together with your representative, inspect these elements on your cranes:

- Are the stair rails secure?
- Is the crane on even ground?
- Does the crane have proper weighting to counter-balance anything it has to lift?
- Are all the welded parts still firmly attached?
- Is the control unit properly enclosed?
- Are the moving parts of the crane mobile and able to move easily?

Here's how checking these points will protect your employees

By checking all of these points you can ensure the crane is safe and secure to avoid an accident where the crane might fall over and seriously injure or kill your employees.

Check all of your equipment to make sure it's safe to use so you don't have any major accidents regardless of what kind of equipment it is.

Consult the Health and Safety Advisor for more on how to check the safety of your construction site equipment.
