Holding a Halloween party at work? Here's how to ensure those jacko-lanterns don't burn your business to the ground

by , 31 October 2014
Halloween has become quite popular in South Africa and a lot of people enjoy celebrating it. After all, the costumes and candy make it a fun event for all ages.

Because of this, you might be thinking of throwing an office Halloween party. But beware! Your office party could turn into a deadly nightmare.

One of the biggest dangers at any Halloween party are those jacko-lanterns. They could burn your office down in a matter of minutes.

If you're using them, this Halloween, take the following safety precautions ...

Don't forget to implement fire safety at your office Halloween party

Firstly, check all your fire extinguishers so you can quickly put out any accidental fires. Also check your fire escape to ensure your employees can get out of the building if this happens.

Next, place jacko-lanterns or any other open flames above the floor. If you don't, it's possible that someone's fancy Halloween costume could catch fire as they walk past. Put any candles at a safe height off the floor to prevent this.

Be careful of using flammable decorations such as paper streamers or posters near any flames. These increase the chance of something catching on fire. Rather place jacko-lanterns and other candles on a flat surface away from other decorations.

Here's the best way to remove the danger of a fire at your Halloween party.

Do this to remove the fire hazard from jacko-lanterns

Use electric candles. These remove the hazard of an open flame and still give the same effect. These run off batteries so there aren't any dangerous cables.

Even though the point of a Halloween party is to have fun and let off a little steam, you still have to ensure the event is safe. Ensure you put proper fire safety in place to do this.
