How often do you do safety audits? It may not be enough!

by , 08 August 2014
Your health and safety programme may not be working. That's right! That programme you put so much effect into may be ineffective.

But how do you know?

Most business owners never will and it's all because they don't do regular safety audits. The point of a safety audit is to ensure your programme is working. If you only do an audit every five years or when something goes wrong, you're in trouble.

Take a look below to find out when you should do a health and safety audit so you can ensure your health and safety programme works...

Here's when you should do a safety audit

According to the Health and Safety Advisor ,you need to do a safety audit at least once a year. This is the minimum amount of time you should let pass between your audits.

During the year, you can manage your health and safety programme with risk assessments and safety inspections. This way you can constantly ensure your employees are safe.

But to ensure your safety procedures, protocols and equipment all works the way it does, you must do the full audit process every year.

And to do that you must remember these four things.

Here's what you must remember when you prepare for your annual safety audit

When you start preparing for your annual safety audit remember to:

- Plan which departments you're going to audit;
- Decide which employees you want to interviews; and
- Choose who will be in your audit team if you have one.

So ensure you never let more than a year pass between your safety audits. If you do, your health and safety programme may fall apart and you may not know until it's too late.
