If your employees experience the same unfair working conditions Gautrain workers do, you could face fines from the DoL

by , 06 August 2014
Have you taken a ride on the Gautrain lately? If you have, you'll know it's a comfortable, efficient way to travel around Gauteng.

What you won't know is, behind all that comfort and luxury for you, are workers who have terrible working conditions.

You wouldn't think driving a Gautrain could be a terrible job, but it is! These drivers have to deal with countless labour infringement and health and safety issues.

If your employees ever experience these kinds of unsafe working conditions, the DoL will fine you...

Here's how you can be 100% sure your risk assessments are legally compliant...

Everything you need to effectively manage risk in your business, avoid accidents in the workplace and be 100% compliant with the DoL is now available to you in this one resource.

Can you afford to not have it?

These are the health and safety issues Gautrain drives face

According to IOLnews.co.za, the drivers and conductors that make the Gautrain run want to go on strike because of unfair working conditions.

These are some of the health and safety issues they face every day:

- They work eight days in a row, which means the drivers are extremely tired.
- Park Station, where the train line ends, isn't safe because there's still a lot of dust from construction.
- The train's electricity boxes are in the drivers rest rooms.
- Drivers' seats aren't comfortable and cause kidney problems and backache.

And I haven't even touched on the labour infringements. (You'll need to keep reading FSP Business for more on those.)

These health and safety risks are enough for the DoL to get involved.

And that's why to prevent a DoL shutdown in your business, you must do the following if your employees face similar conditions.

Here's what to do if your employees face similar poor working conditions

If your employees face similar poor working conditions you must:

- Allow employees to take more days off to rest. Tired employees don't concentrate properly and this means they can cause accidents.
- Clean up your workplace to get rid of any dust or debris that could give your employees lung problems.
- Keep all electrical equipment in protected areas where employees don't need to go.
- Give your employees kidney belts if they have to sit on uncomfortable seats for a long time.

If your employees face similar terrible working conditions to the ones the Gautrain workers face, you must deal with them A.S.A.P.

Do you have more than 20 employees?

Don't ignore this health and safety obligation or else!

The DoL will slap you with a R50 000 fine or 1 year in jail if you don't have a health and safety representative.
