Keep the numbers of these three people handy! You'll need to call them if an accident happens at work

by , 29 August 2014
When accidents happen, you need to be ready to deal with them. This doesn't just mean helping the injured and securing the area. It means investigating WHY the accident happened in the first place.

This means you need to do a full accident investigation. But you can't do it on your own.

You need to call on certain people to help you through the investigation process. So if an accident happens, reach for these three people's numbers...

Reach for these people's numbers when a workplace accident happens

To do a thorough accident investigation, you must call on the members of your investigation team.

These people are:

1. Any person you appointed into a health and safety position. There are 33 different health and safety positions you may have made. This member of your team can be any of these health and safety appointees;

2. A health and safety representative (HSE Rep). Even if you have more than one HSE Rep, you only need one of them in your investigation team. If you have more than one HSE rep, discuss this appointment with all of them to see who'll be best for your investigation team; and

3. A member of your Health and Safety Committee. This could be a member of management, for example.

These are the first people you must contact if an accident happens and you need to investigate. But what's their job?

This is your investigation team's job

The members of your investigation team must help you collect evidence after a workplace accident. This includes physical evidence and eye witness testimonies from other employees.

So call on the members of your investigation team to get the job done.
