Make sure you're not like Charles' manager when you display your safety signs

by , 02 August 2013
Charles liked to smoke in the yard while he takes his break. One morning, his manager stored gas bottles in a cage in that area and displayed safety signs to warn his employees. When Charles arrived at his favourite smoking spot, he saw the green safety signs and knew from his training that green safety signs were for general information only. But in South Africa warning signs are red not green! As Charles smoked, he walked directly to where the gas bottles were kept and put himself in danger of an explosion! Keep reading to find out which safety signs his manager should've used!

Make sure you're not like Charles' manager when you display your safety signs

Charles' manager bought and displayed safety signs to protect his employees from the gas bottles. What he didn't know, was that the safety signs he displayed weren't standard for South Africa. The signs weren't only the wrong colour but some were also the wrong size. This doesn't seem like it's important but it is! To make sure your safety signs comply with the SANS standard, make sure they have 'SANS 1186' on them.

When you bring any materials or equipment into your premises, you need to conduct a risk assessment. Then you need to find out which safety signs you'll need to put up so your employees will keep safe. The common ones will show emergency exit routes and firefighting equipment. But they must be the right colour, the right size and it must be displayed in the right place. But which safety signs do you need for your workplace?
