Revealed: Your health and safety responsibilities at sports and recreational events

by , 05 September 2013
If you organise, plan and implement sports and recreational events, it's crucial you comply with the Safety at Sports and Recreational Events Act (SSRE) and the Occupational Health and Safety Act (OHSA). Read on to discover your health and safety responsibilities at events so you can avoid penalties.

Ensuring that your employees are safe also applies during sports and recreational events.

To do this means, you must comply with the requirements set out in the OHSA and SSRE Act.

Do you know what these requirements are?

Is your company organising an event? Here are your legal duties

If you're holding an event, your company or organising body must:

  • Put in place measures to ensure the physical safety and security of people and their property at an event.
  • Cooperate with and assist the event safety and security planning committee and the Venue Operation Centre (VOC) commander to enable him to perform his duties.

What is a VOC commander?

According to the Health&Safety Advisor, a VOC Commander is a person appointed by the National Commissioner of Safety and Security and will be a police officer experienced in event safety and security.

Please note that the National Commissioner of Safety and Security may direct you as an event organiser to implement additional safety measures if he thinks it's necessary.

Also keep in mind that the VOC Commander will need help to manage safety and security at the event and has to appoint the following people:

  • Sufficient people to be responsible for safety and security at an event, including an event safety officer and security officers.
  • The VOC Commander may also appoint volunteers to supervise arrangements or provide any function or service in support of an event.

In addition, a VOC Commander may appoint stewards responsible for marshalling and overseeing of the safe general flow of spectators as well as the provision of assistance with emergency evacuation procedures.

Remember, your company or organising body must also form an event safety and security planning committee for each event. Make sure you stick to these responsibilities to comply with OHSA.
