Stop, think, act! Here's how careful planning can make or break your health and safety programme

by , 17 June 2014
You can't just snap into action and slap on health and safety procedures like a band aid. You actually have to think about what procedures your employees need to follow.

You need a plan of action. A safety-plan of action to be specific. If you don't plan your procedures first, you'll have massive gaps in your health and safety programme.

As that old saying goes: 'If you fail to prepare, you prepare to fail'.

That's why we're revealing, the best way to create your safety-plan of action...

Costly health and safety blunders that 2 out of 3 companies make every year.

Are you a culprit too?

If you don't plan, you can't proceed with your health and safety procedures

When you set up your safety-plan of action you need to ask these five questions:

1. What are the dangers?
2. Who's in danger?
3. What can you do to prevent this danger?
4. How can you teach your employees to prevent this danger themselves?
5. How often do you need to re-evaluate these dangers?

Answering these questions will give you the basis for your safety plan. Let's take a closer look at each of these points…

Turn your answers into a safety plan

Once you've answered these questions, you must turn those answers into a plan:

What are the dangers?
You must find the answer to this question through a risk assessment. Observing your employees is the best way to see what dangers affect them. This will help you plan what kind of safety precautions you need.

Who's in danger?
This answer will help you plan which employees need what safety equipment and OHS training.

What can you do to prevent it?
This answer will help you plan the kind of precautions you want to take. They can be 'terminate', 'transfer', 'treat' or 'tolerate' precautions.

How can you teach your employees to prevent this danger themselves?
This will help you assess the kind of training you need to give your employees. We recommend you use a training needs analysis to help you answer this question.

How often do you need to re-evaluate these dangers?
Because risks and danger are always changing you need to constantly reassess them. We advise you do this at least every six months

If you can plan out your health and safety programme clearly first time, you can spot potential problems early. So remember to stop, think and then act on your health and safety plan.
