Use this checklist to see if your first aid kit has the right quantities...

If you employ five people or more, you must have a first aid kit in your workplace (General Safety Regulations 3.2). Recently the Compensation for Occupational Injuries and Diseases Act (COID) made changes to the quantities of the items you must have in your first aid kit.

According to the COID Act and General Safety Regulations Annexure, your first aid kits must have these 18 items. Check if your first aid kit has the right quantities…

18 Items you must have in your first aid kit

Use this checklist of the 18 items your basic first aid kit (Regulation 3) must have to ensure yours is compliant:

 
Wound cleaner/antiseptic (100 ml);


Swabs for cleaning wounds;


Cotton wool for padding (100 g);


Sterile gauze (minimum quantity 10);


1 Pair of forceps (for splinters);


1 Pair of scissors (minimum size 100 mm);


1 Set of safety pins;


4 Triangular bandages;


4 Roller bandages (75 mm x 5m);


4 Roller bandages (100 mm x 5m);


1 Roll of elastic adhesive (25 mm x 3 m);


1 Non-allergenic adhesive strip (25 mm x 3 m);


1 Packet of adhesive dressing strips (minimum quantity, 10 assorted sizes);


4 First aid dressings (75 mm x 100 mm);


4 First aid dressings (150 mm x 200 mm);


2 Straight splints;


2 Pairs large and 2 pairs medium disposable latex gloves; and


2 CPR mouth pieces or similar devices.

If you don't have a first aid kit, stocked with the right quantities of these 18 items, and the DoL inspector comes knocking… He can fine you. You can get up to one year jail time (COID Regulation 12). Plus a fine of R200 per day for every day your offence continues (General Safety Regulation 3). Don't let the DoL catch you unawares… Replenish your First Aid kit today!
