Three things a DoL inspector will want to see when he walks onto your site for a safety inspection

by , 25 June 2014
Your health and safety programme is in action. Your employees know the drill and they're happy to comply with the rules. Everything's working well and you're ready for any safety issues that arise.

But are you ready for the day a DoL inspector pays you a visit?

Will you be able to spring into action and show him exactly what he wants to see?

It's better to have it all there, ready and waiting instead of nervously trying to get the inspector's approval. Ensure you're ready to show the DoL inspector these three things during his safety inspection...

*Knock knock* The Labour Inspector arrives unannounced… are you ready?

If you operate any machinery in your workplace, GMR Schedule D or C must be in clear view for employees to see. This will be the first thing the inspector will look out for when he's paying an unscheduled visit to your workplace.  If you are missing these summaries, he will slap you with a fine. Don't get caught without them.

The DoL inspector wants to see that you've complied with OHS regulations during the safety inspection

If you want to prove you've complied to the DoL inspector you need to show him all the health and safety records you have. These should prove you've trained your employees, given them safety equipment and done a risk assessment. These records prove you've complied with things the inspector may not be able to see otherwise.

Next, the inspector will want to see your employees' working conditions. He'll look to see if these conditions are safe and clean. Are there any obvious dangers to your employees and, if so, what precautions have you taken?

There's one more thing he'll want to see, and you must be able to show it to him...

Your OHS Policy is one of the most important things the inspector will want to see

You know you have to have an OHS Policy and the DoL will want to see it. You must ensure it's complete and has all of the relevant information in it.

If you can show the DoL inspector these three things to prove you've complied with safety regulations, you'll pass the inspection with flying colours.
