Three things your employees need to know about HIV so they can protect themselves

by , 10 November 2014
HIV is a huge problem in South Africa. And it's one that could seriously affect your employees if they're not careful.

That's why you need to educate them on the dangers of HIV in the workplace. Otherwise, a simple accident in your workplace could turn into a serious HIV risk.

When you educate your employees on HIV, ensure they know these three things so they can protect themselves against the disease...

Educate your employees on these three things about HIV

1. Educate your employees on how HIV infections happen
You need to make sure your employees understand how they could contract HIV. Explain to them that human bodily fluids carry the disease.

If they absorb infected bodily fluids into their body, they could contract the disease. This could happen if:

- They have a cut; or
- The bodily fluids go into their eye, mouth or any other opening in their body.

Reduce the impact of HIV on your workforce

How you may ask?

By educating your employees on:

- How to prevent HIV;
- How to prevent spreading it;
- How to work with HIV or Aids; and
- How to manage HIV or Aids.

You can minimise the effect their health and HIV status has on your business!

2. Tell your employees how to protect themselves against HIV
Tell your employees to avoid any situation where they could come into contact with someone else's bodily fluids. If someone has an injury at work, they must call the first aider instead of trying to help. The first aider will have the right equipment to prevent coming into contact with bodily fluids.

3. Tell your employees what to do if they do come into contact with HIV positive bodily fluids
If this happens, your employee must report it immediately so you can help them get ARVs. An early dose will help reduce the chance of an infection.

You should also give your employee counseling in case this happens.

Educate your employees on these three things about HIV so they know how to protect themselves against this deadly disease.
